Our New Tanalised 2.4M Treated Railway Sleepers are our cheapest and ideal for landscaping projects, including retaining walls and also raised garden beds.
When it comes to choosing between original, reclaimed sleepers and new Tanalised softwood sleepers it is important to consider the safety of your intended use.
Railway Sleeper Safety
While you might seek the rustic, old cottage aesthetic for your home or garden, addressing safety considerations is essential. Reclaimed railway sleepers, having been used on the railway for many years and covered with dirt and oil, are not new, Tanalised or treated. Therefore, they are not ideal for food-growing beds.
The reclaimed sleepers at Grangewood Fencing were treated with creosote, which can leach into surrounding soil. This makes them unsuitable for raised beds used to grow fruit and vegetables. It is also unadvisable to use them in areas where there will be regular contact with skin (garden furniture, playareas, etc) or indoors (fireplaces, lintels, etc).
For the above applications, it is always recommended that new sleepers are used.
New railway sleeper uses
We treat the 2.4m New Railway Sleepers with chemicals safe for human contact post-treatment, making them versatile for various uses, including:
- Raised flower beds
- Fruit & veg plots
- Garden paths and steps
- Garden edging and dividers
- Interior focal pieces
- Seating and furniture
- Ponds
We supply our new railway sleepers pressure-treated with Tanalith, a process commonly known as tanalisation. This will enhance the style and help protect the timber from insect infestation, fungal decay and rot. Weather exposure can cause timber to fade over time. If this happens, consider applying additional stain to improve the product’s appearance.
Please Note: Tanalised pressure treated timber has a built-in colouration and depending on the timber species the treatment colour may vary slightly.
Log Selection
We ensure quality by carefully selecting natural resources, hand-picking the best parts of logs to meet specific component needs. As a result, this method ensures consistent quality and meets our rigorous standards, providing customers with durable and reliable railway sleepers.
At the ‘green mill,’ we cut logs into rectangular shapes, which may develop rough edges due to full saturation. To address this, we season the timber by drying it, then machine it for smooth surfaces.
Sustainable Railway Sleepers
As the global benchmark for responsible forest management, the FSC logo identifies products that contain wood from well-managed forests. Furthermore, these forests are certified in accordance with the rules of the Forest Stewardship Council. Specifically, FSC is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.
Our forests give us many things like books, tissues, furniture and so much more. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) helps take care of forests, people and furthermore, wildlife who call them home too. Buying products identified with either scheme’s logo, therefore, helps support the growth of responsible forest management worldwide. By choosing these products, you are contributing to a more sustainable future for global forests.
