 About our Planed Redwood Sleeper

Our pressure-treated softwood Planed Redwood Sleeper is ideal for a variety of landscaping projects, including retaining walls, edging, and building raised garden beds.

Why Choose Planed Redwood Sleeper?

When it comes to choosing between original, reclaimed, softwood and softwood sleepers it is important to consider the safety of your intended use.

Railway Sleeper Safety

While you might be looking for that rustic, old cottage aesthetic for your home or garden, there are some safety considerations to address. Reclaimed railway sleepers are just that, reclaimed. They were used on the railway for many years and can be covered with dirt and oil.

Our reclaimed sleepers at Grangewood Fencing are treated with creosote, which in brief, makes them unsuitable for raised beds used to grow vegetables. It is also unadvisable to use them in areas where there will be regular contact with skin (garden furniture, play areas, etc) or indoors (fireplaces, lintels, etc).

For the above applications, it is always recommended that new softwood or softwood sleepers are used.

Planed Redwood Sleeper uses

We pressure-treat our Planed Redwood Sleeper, ensuring it’s safe for human contact, which makes it perfect uses including:

  • Raised flower beds
  • Fruit & veg plots
  • Garden paths and steps
  • Garden edging and dividers
  • Interior focal pieces
  • Seating and furniture
  • Ponds

Please Note: Tanalised pressure treated timber has a built-in colouration and depending on the timber species the treatment colour may vary slightly.

Log Selection

Selecting natural resources carefully is also key to making successful products. In addition, we hand-pick raw materials to fit each component. At the green mill, we saw the logs into rectangular shapes, although this can leave a rough surface. If needed, we season the timber by drying it to remove moisture, then machine it for smooth or shaped finishes.

The sharp point and aggressive thread of our Timberlok Heavy Duty Woodscrew can in fact penetrate even the densest wood.

Helping to maintain ‘Forests For All Forever’

The global benchmark for responsible forest management, The FSC logo identifies products which contain wood from well-managed forests. These are certified following the rules of the Forest Stewardship Council. FSC is an international, non-governmental organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests.

Our forests give us many things like books, tissues, furniture, etc. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) helps take care of forests and the people and wildlife who also call them home. Buying products identified with either scheme’s logo helps support the growth of responsible forest management worldwide.
